Athens, Ohio and Ohio University have a rich history with deep roots in several key cultural innovations. These include beautiful scenery, half-finished construction projects, a plethora of social watering holes where the masses meet to enjoy a “cold” one while watching their favorite sport team lose again and, of course, bricks. Whether it’s the Battle of the Bricks football game against rival school Miami University of Ohio, or the tradition of ripping a piece off the road up and taking it with you when you leave, bricks are truly a building block throughout the metropolis of Athens, and they hold together the tradition of the town. However, you might ask yourself, “What are the best bricks in town? What bricks really exemplify the ‘Athens’ experience?” So I set out to find the best seven bricks in all of Athens and show you, the reader, what these cornerstones of the town are really all about. 1. This remarkable specimen, found on the corner of East State Street and Stimson Avenue, truly exemplifies the tradition of excellence that echoes throughout the hallowed streets of Athens, Ohio. From the front and side, this brick is truly a cornerstone in Athens, Ohio. Found near West Green, a brick like this needs to be admired. Yes, even in the forgotten catwalks and crumbling towers of the Back South, bricks can be beautiful. This brick understands what it takes to hold the firm cultural image of South Green together… and it brings a tear to the eye of this writer. They say very dark red is the new red, and I say this brick has got the whole package. This brick stands out among the crowd, and doesn’t need to shout out loud because it’s got it.
