If you’re interested, we hire year-round for a variety of staff positions, from reporters to social media managers to web developers. All are welcome to join — no experience required!

Interviews for executive positions are conducted every spring. To apply for an executive position, you must have a minimum of one year experience at a student or professional media publication.

The local editor is responsible for organizing a staff covering local news at Ohio University and the city of Athens. With the help of the assistant local editor, the local editor keeps track of, assigns and writes stories within this area of coverage. Both editors are expected to oversee the publication of at least three local stories per week. They will also fact check and edit articles, as well as participate in weekly executive and staff meetings.
While the assistant local editor assists the local editor in completing weekly duties, they may also be required to generate written and digital content as necessary.
The state editor will keep track of, assign and write state-oriented stories. They are expected to oversee the publication of at least three state stories per week. They will also fact check and edit articles, as well as participate in weekly executive and staff meetings.
The opinion editor is responsible for organizing and overseeing the opinion section the The New Political, including guest columns and coordinating satire coverage with AVW Newstime. The opinion editor is expected to help writers develop clear pitches and edit each opinion piece submitted for publication, including fact checking and copy editing.
The projects editor facilitates all long form and long term projects of The New Political, produces a regular stream of content for the publication and manages a staff of project writers.
The copy chief is responsible for overseeing the copy editing of stories. The copy chief will manage a staff of copy editors so that all content being posted, including news articles, feature stories, multimedia pieces and social media content. They will also offer workshops or educational efforts to teach staff members AP Style.
Social Media Director
The social media director will oversee all New Political social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram and Tumblr. The manager will develop social media strategies based on analytics, implement new social media ideas and create social media content.
Public Relations Chief
The head of The New Political’s public relations team is expected to manage all PR staff members, develop and coordinate advertising and promote The New Political’s content and events. The PR chief works closely with the social media and design teams.
Executive Web Developer
The executive web developer will oversee the management of thenewpolitical.com by overseeing projects to improve the website through regular maintenance and various projects.
The design editor will oversee the management of the design staff and leading design projects. These include creating graphics for news and feature stories, layouts for special issues such as voter’s guides, web page graphics and brand development.
The photo chief is responsible for coordinating photographers to gather necessary photos for news and feature stories, as well as compiling stock photos for the publication and creating photo essays.
The video producer manages and guides staff videographers. This includes helping brainstorm and assign projects, as well as assisting in the production and editing of the videos.
The podcast producer manages and guides the podcast team. This includes helping brainstorm and assign projects, as well as assisting in the production and editing of the podcasts.
Research and Development Director
Research and development directors will oversee various projects for the improvement of the publication and its staff members. These projects could include awards applications, internship and job application support, and guidance and editing of multimedia projects.
